Workshop: Control and Integration Strategies for Data Center Power and Voltage Stability

The session presents solutions for voltage fluctuations, power integration, and advanced control strategies in modern data centers, focusing on both grid-connected and islanded operating scenarios. In a grid-connected scenario, rapidly varying load demand from data centers can introduce voltage instabilities and impact overall grid reliability, requiring coordinated integration strategies with utilities.

In contrast, the islanded scenario examines cases where data centers operate using on-site power generation resources such as reciprocating gas engines and turbine generators, fuel cells, or renewable energy integrated with battery storage. While islanding enhances resilience and continuity of operations during grid outages, it introduces additional technical challenges: balancing variable generation with fluctuating demand, stabilizing voltage and frequency without grid support, and optimizing control strategies for microgrid level stability.

We also expand on how secondary control systems are required for integration of voltage regulation, inverter-based controls, and energy storage to play a pivotal role in ensuring smooth transitions between grid-connected and islanded modes. Overall, we provide insights into designing resilient data center infrastructures capable of maintaining power quality, minimizing disturbances, and ensuring operational reliability in both interconnected and islanded scenarios.
